The most recent survey of adult protective service agencies (2006) revealed 565,747 reports of elder and vulnerable adult mistreatment nationwide. However, elder abuse is frequently unrecognized especially in the early stages, therefore incidence and prevalence of elder mistreatment is under-reported. Many healthcare providers do not routinely screen for elder abuse in their patients.
