Direct experience with community dwelling elders as part of an interdisciplinary team is important for health professional students. To allow students to have this experience , the H-GEC initiated a popular and engaging student learning activity - an annual Interdisciplinary Student Competition.
Students from the schools representative of the H-GEC (nursing, dentistry and dental hygiene, medicine, public health, pharmacy, social work, occupational and physical therapy, and health informatics) participate in a competition whereby students are divided into two teams. Each team is expected to work together as an interdisciplinary group and assigned to a specific activity related to serving the underserved populations of Houston, Texas. The competition culminates in presentations by each team, and is judged by a panel of faculty and community leaders. The winning team receives a prize; each participating student receives an engraved medallion to wear at graduation. In the past, topics have included assessments of homebound elders, disaster preparedness for elders, and elder abuse and neglect.
